What is it?
Mainstay Life Services' Summer Program is a unique, urban camping experience. The program runs for four weeks in July with extended, overnight stay on a college campus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One and two week sessions are offered.
Campers are constantly on the go, enjoying the rich variety of cultural and recreational activities offered by Pittsburgh and the surrounding area. Activities include baseball games, trips to amusement parks and museums, riverboat tours, movies, shopping, sightseeing, and more.
Who attends?
The program is attended by adults (18 years of age and over) with developmental disabilities who live the rest of the year with their families.
Why is it important?
The camp is a vacation that participants look forward to throughout the year. It offers individuals the opportunity to engage in recreational activities and social interactions that they might not otherwise have a chance to experience. Campers enjoy the time away from home, and love taking trips around the city and spending time with friends.
The program also provides needed respite for family members who are able to send their loved one on a vacation while getting needed rest themselves.
How can I help?
Donations are accepted for the Summer Program. The program cost is $970 per week per camper. Mainstay Life Services pays a portion of that cost. The remainder is paid by the families (usually through their independent supports coordination unit).
A donation designated to support the Summer Program will help in many ways, including: defraying the costs of room and board, sending individuals on a day trip, or providing needed transportation for campers.
Donations can be sent to: Development Department, Mainstay Life Services, 200 Roessler Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15220.
